The Season

Typically, the rivers which we fish, with some exceptions, open on October 1 and close on April 30. I am frequently asked what time of year is the best.
Unfortunately there is no easy answer. If you are prepared to experience some unsettled weather but often superb fishing October is worth a shot. By November and December things are warming up and insect activity is usually very good. January is holiday time in NZ but the warmer weather and more settled conditions can make this an excellent month. February and March are typically settled and dry. Rivers are likely to be at their lowest levels but this can be an advantage as some of the bigger waters are able to be accessed with spectacular results, and terrestrial activity peaks at this time. April is normally calm and settled. Cooler nights make for shorter but intense periods of activity. Rivers are often deserted in April making for relaxed and enjoyable angling.
